Chapter 22

The distant ringtone of my cell in the kitchen pulled my eyes away from the movie I was watching. I glanced at the time on the cable box. Rick had been gone about three hours. Thinking it might be him, I sprang from the couch in the den and sprinted through the house to catch it before the ringing stopped. Looking at the caller ID, I tensed. I didn’t recognize the number. It chimed a few more times while I debated swiping right. Thinking that maybe Rick was calling me from another phone, I tentatively answered. “Hello?”

“Chanelle?” a male voice asked.

The poor connection caused static on the line, making it difficult to hear. “Who’s calling?”

His answer was inaudible.

“I’m sorry, but I can’t hear you. Who’s this?”

Through the choppy reception, I heard a male voice ask, “Is this better?”

My stomach touched my feet. With the line clear as crystals, I knew who was calling. And I wished he wasn’t. “Sean?”

“Yeah. Um, is now a good time to talk?”

My eyes traveled around the room and I slowly lowered myself onto the wooden chair at the table in the breakfast nook, keeping the kitchen door in full view. Not that I was doing anything wrong, but I didn’t want Rick popping up on me. “Um. I guess so.”

“How are you?”

“Fine. You?”

He didn’t answer right away, and that surprised me. “I’ve been alright. I’m planning a trip to Michigan and I was wondering if, maybe, we could get together for dinner.”

“Sean, the last time we spoke I thought I was clear. We made a clean break. Dinner wouldn’t be a good idea.”

“I understand. But I want to see you. I have something I need to tell you.” I heard his nerves and didn’t understand it.

“Can you tell me now?”

“I’d prefer to tell you in person.”

I sighed my frustration with this conversation. “Sean, I have a lot going on these days.”

“I understand,” he repeated himself. “But I’ve missed you and we need to talk.”

With my elbow on the table, I held my head in my hand. “I don’t want to hurt your feelings and I’m sure you’re still a great guy, but I’m not interested in having dinner with you. That time in my life has passed. I hope you will respect my decision.”

“Cynthia and I aren’t together anymore,” he blurted.

I popped up straight in the chair. If this had been eight months ago, I’d have jumped up and danced around the room. But now, his declaration did nothing for me. “Okay… If you’re happy, then I’m happy for you.”

“I don’t think you get it. We’re not together. That means you and I have a chance to explore a real relationship.”

“Like I said, I’m happy for you, but I have no desire to be with you, Sean. I’m embarrassed by what happened between us and, quite honestly, I want to forget it.”

“Did you like the flowers?”

My blood turned to ice. “What did you ask me?”

“Uh... uh…,” he stuttered. “The flowers. I know how much you like yellow roses.
